coverCharlotte's Web
by E.B. White (List: $5.95/Amazon Price: $4.76)
This is a wonderful children's classic that speaks of friends, love and life as found among a group of animals in a barnyard.  Not only is it a nice story for 8-11 year olds to read to themselves, it is also a very good book to read to a 5-7 year old and get a good snuggle out of it!  Buy it today

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
by Judi Barrett, Judi Barrett, Ron Barrett  (List: $5.99/Amazon Price: $4.79)
It rains tomato juice in Chewandswallow, often followed by hamburger storms and ice cream winds.  Yup, in this fantastical town, no one own a refrigerator because the weather brings all the food they need.  Leftovers are, of course, recycled.  Then, one day, the weather goes CRAZY and the food just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  OK, I won't give away the ending of this really really funny book with its hilarious illustrations (look for the grown-up jokes).  Parents can read this again and again and kids love it!  Buy it today

coverDinosaur Bob and His Adventures With the Family Lazardo (Reading Rainbow Book)
by William Joyce (List: $15.95/Amazon Price: $11.17 - Hardcover)
What happens when the adventurous Larzardo family brings home the dinosaur they found on their most recent exotic vacation?  Pimlico Hills will never be the same.  I keep waiting for William Joyce to write more of these books about the Lazardos and their loving pet, Bob.  You will too!   Buy it today

Elmer
by David McKee cover(List: $14.00/Amazon Price: $9.80 - Hardcover)
Elmer looks so different from the other elephants.  Always a joker, the others enjoy laughing at his jokes, but Elmer longs to be like the "regular" elephants.  This is a great story to read aloud when you want to explain to your child about how people are different, how people are the same, and what make an individual special.  In pre-school, this was the book my youngest choose to have me read for Parent's Week.  Buy it today

coverGoodnight Moon
by Margaret Wise Brown, Clement Hurd (List: $7.95/Amazon Price: $3.98)
Most parents will know the text by heart after two readings but very young children find the words, tone and simple illustrations very soothing.  This board book will be passed on to younger siblings and then kept in a memory box for grandchildren to enjoy.  Buy it today

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
by J.K. Rowling cover(List: $17.95/Amazon Price: $8.98 - Hardcover)
Harry Potter lead a very ordinary yet sad and difficult life until he learns that he is really the orphan child of wizards....and is sent off to the very special (and magical) boarding school for kids like him.  This is the hottest children's series since, since,....I don't know when.  Your 10-12 year old will love it - and so will you.  Buy it today

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (List: $17.95/Amazon Price: $8.98 - Hardcover)  This is the second in the series and just as good! Buy it today

coverHop on Pop
by Dr.Seuss (List: $7.99/Amazon Price: $5.59 - Hardcover)

This book is a sentimental favorite in our home since it was the first one that my older son could read on his own.  What a triumph!  Simple rhyming phrases that are well illustrated (for context clues) gives a child the great gift of reading a book to him- or herself.  Buy it today

Stellaluna
by Janell Cannon (List: $16.00/Amazon Price: $11.20 - Hardcover)
coverThere are many books about the unbreakable love between a child and parent.  Stellaluna is the least conventional and most charming I have come across.  Young Stellaluna is separated from her mother when an owl attacks them.  She lands in a bird nest and is adopted by the bird family with whom she tries so had to conform.  One day, she realizes that she can see and fly at night,. leading the way back to her mom and a heartwarming reunion.  Buy it today

Stuart Little
by E.B. White (List: $5.95/Amazon Price: $4.76)
I love this book, my kids love this book, my husband loves this book, you'll love this book.  It is a true classic.  The adventures of Stuart Little, the oddly mouse-like son of a very kind, very human family makes for wonderful bedtime reading - either aloud or independently by an older child (8-11 years).  Buy it today

Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm
by Jerdine Nolen, Mark Buehner (List: $4.95/Amazon Price: $3.96)
coverI feel badly that more families don't know of this delightful story.  Harvey Potter is a taciturn farmer who comes to a small town and plants a most unusual crop: balloons!  Yep, planted in the middle of the night and growing in a rainbow of colors on stalks.  A young African-American girl befriends Harvey and learns his secrets.  What a great tale!  This is a fun listening books for a younger child and a good read for a second or third grader.  Buy it today

coverThe Cat in the Hat
by Dr. Seuss (List: $7.99/Amazon Price: $5.59 - Hardcover)
I know this book by heart - first from when I was a kid and now, from reading it a gazillion times to my boys.  That crazy cat, the kids he drops in on, the wise righteous fish - all are the ingredients of a memorable childhood tale.  Just make sure you add your own disclaimer at the end when Dr. Seuss asks if YOU would tell YOUR mother (of course, you would!!!).  Buy it today

The Sneetches and Other Stories
by Dr. Seusscover (List: $14.00/Amazon Price: $9.80 - Hardcover)
This is my FAVORITE Dr. Seuss.  We always enjoyed it for the variety of stories and poems it contains, including the great "Too Many Daves", "What Was I Scared Of" and of course, "The Sneetches" (those embattled creatures with - or without- stars on their bellies).  If you have a kid named Dave, want to read a spooky Dr. Seuss or just want a fun assortment, you can't go wrong with this book!  Buy it today

coverTomie DePaola's Mother Goose
by Tomie DePaola (Illustrator) (List: $24.99/Amazon Price: $17.49 - Hardcover)
There is so much more to Mother Goose than Hickory Dickory Dock and Three Blind Mice - when you read this book, you will be astounded!  Tomie DePaola's whimsical illustrations accompany dozens (maybe hundreds) of these verses.  If every child should have a Mother Goose book, then this is the one!  With its hardcover, it is an heirloom.   Buy it today

The Real Tooth Fairy
by Marilyn Kaye, Helen Coganberry (List: $6.00/Amazon Price: $4.80)
This is a lovely story about a child who loses that first tooth, groggily sees her mom put a coin under her pillow and determines that Mom moonlights as the real Tooth Fairy.  This theory becomes contentious as other schoolmates lose teeth and decide their own parents are the real tooth fairy.  The ending is a wonderful and warm surprise without being overly saccharine - a special book to read to a child when that momentous tooth is lost!  (Although the cover is not available on-line to show you, it is a beautifully illustrated book.)  Buy it today
