Elmer

Elmer looks so different from the other elephants.  Always a joker, the others enjoy laughing at his jokes, but Elmer longs to be like the "regular" elephants.  This is a great story to read aloud when you want to explain to your child about how people are different, how people are the same, and what make an individual special.  In pre-school, this was the book my youngest choose to have me read for Parent's Week.  Buy it today

Stellaluna

There are many books about the unbreakable love between a child and parent.  Stellaluna is the least conventional and most charming I have come across.  Young Stellaluna is separated from her mother when an owl attacks them.  She lands in a bird nest and is adopted by the bird family with whom she tries so had to conform.  One day, she realizes that she can see and fly at night,. leading the way back to her mom and a heartwarming reunion.  Buy it today

Stuart Little

I feel badly that more families don't know of this delightful story.  Harvey Potter is a taciturn farmer who comes to a small town and plants a most unusual crop: balloons!  Yep, planted in the middle of the night and growing in a rainbow of colors on stalks.  A young African-American girl befriends Harvey and learns his secrets.  What a great tale!  This is a fun listening books for a younger child and a good read for a second or third grader.  Buy it today

The Cat in the Hat
